US charges NSA whistleblower with espionage

According to reports, NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden has been charged by federal prosecutors with espionage and theft of government property.
Syracuse (CNN/The Washington Post/WSYR-TV) – According to reports, NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden has been charged by federal prosecutors with espionage and theft of government property.

CNN reports that the criminal complaint was unsealed Friday in U.S. District Court in Virginia.

The Washington Post is reporting that the US has asked Hong Kong to detain Snowden on a provisional arrest warrant, citing US officials.

29-year-old Snowden has openly admitted to being the source behind the leaking of the National Security Agency's surveillance programs in interviews.

The documents Snowden leaked revealed the top-secret surveillance program known as PRISM, which collects the records of domestic telephone calls in the US and monitors online activity of residents overseas.

Snowden worked as an intelligence analyst contractor for the NSA in Hawaii.
