Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - An officer-involved shooting at a Utica playground over the weekend left a young man dead.

Utica Police have ruled the death of 19-year-old Jessie Lee Rose a suicide.

Police say they received a call that several shots were fired at Addison Miller Park around 12:15 p.m. on Sunday.

When Utica Police Officer Anthony Ellis arrived on scene, he reported seeing Rose carrying a long gun in a nearby wooded area.

Ellis says Rose refused to drop the gun when ordered to and then pointed the gun towards the officer.

He fired two shots at Rose, one hitting him in the hand.

Ellis then reported that Rose turned his gun and shot himself in the abdomen.

Rose later died at a hospital from the abdominal wound.

Police say they found notes on the Rose’s body which leads them to believe he was suicidal.
