Video: Michigan woman says hiring a hitman to kill her husband would be ‘easier than divorce’

A Michigan woman has admitted that she tried to have her husband murdered after being caught on tape casually hiring a State Police officer posing as a hitman.

Muskegon, Mich. (WSYR-TV/CNN) – A Michigan woman has admitted that she tried to have her husband murdered after being caught on tape casually hiring a State Police officer posing as a hitman.

Police set up the sting after one of 21-year-old Julia Merfeld’s coworkers alerted them that she was trying to have the man killed.

Undercover police videos reveal Merfeld smiling and laughing while she plans the killing.

"As terrible as it sounds, it's easier than divorcing him. I didn't have to worry about the judgment of my family. I didn't have to worry about breaking his heart,” she tells the undercover police officer in the video.

She offered the officer $50,000 – money that would come from her husband’s life insurance.

Merfeld is scheduled to be sentenced on July 30 after pleading guilty to solicitation of murder.

The minimum sentence for the crime in Michigan is six years in prison.
