Weather stalls search for missing canoeist

Emergency crews and Sheriff’s Deputies suspended their search for a missing canoeist on Friday because of increasingly foul weather.
Covert (WSYR-TV) – Emergency crews and Sheriff’s Deputies suspended their search for a missing canoeist on Friday because of increasingly foul weather.

The search for 22-year-old Christopher Dennis – who disappeared after embarking in a canoe on Cayuga Lake at 5 a.m. on Wednesday – had resumed Friday morning.

According to the Seneca County Sheriff’s Office, searchers endured four to five-foot breaking waves and heavy rain while they searched for the Ithaca man.

Fire department boats sustained damage during the Friday search and had to be put out of service, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

"As the conditions have steadily declined during the day, we felt it prudent to get searchers off the lake for their safety,” said Sheriff Jack Stenberg.

Dennis was reported missing from his camp in the town of Covert on Wednesday.

His friends found Dennis’ canoe overturned in the middle of Cayuga Lake around 12:30 p.m. that day.
