Western New York cop charged in son's killing in Old Forge

A Western New York police officer has been charged with second-degree murder in his son's shooting at an Adirondack motel last summer.
HERKIMER, N.Y. (AP) - A Western New York police officer has been charged with second-degree murder in his son's shooting at an Adirondack motel last summer.

Local media outlets report that 59-year-old Michael Leach pleaded not guilty Wednesday morning during his arraignment in Herkimer County Court after a grand jury indictment was unsealed.

Leach told authorities he shot his 37-year-old son, Matthew Leach, early on the morning of July 21 after mistaking him for an intruder while they were staying at Clark's Beach Motel in the village of Old Forge.

Leach is being held in the county jail on $200,000 bail.

He's a retired Rochester police captain and part-time officer with the police department in Perry in Wyoming County. It couldn't be determined if has a lawyer.
