Zoo welcomes new baby sloth

Rosamond Gifford Zoo welcomed the newest edition to its two-toed sloth family on Tuesday.
Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – Rosamond Gifford Zoo welcomed the newest edition to its two-toed sloth family on Tuesday.

Arana was born on August 1 to Basil and Quinto.

She is the 49th sloth baby born at the zoo.

Arana is unique among the Hoffmann’s two-toed sloths at the zoo since she has been completely “hand-reared” by staff since she was four, according to officials.

The sloths are native to South America.

They are nocturnal and the world's slowest mammal, typically sleeping 15 hours or more each day, traveling hand-over-hand through the tree tops 120 feet or less on a daily basis and only venturing to the ground about once a week.
