Cops say bullied bus monitor doesn’t want criminal charges for kids

Greece (WSYR-TV) - Representatives from the Greece Central School District and local law enforcement held a news conference on Thursday afternoon to address a bullying incident captured on video in which a bus monitor was terrorized by a group of students.

According to Greece Police Captain Steve Chatterton, Karen Klein, the monitor who was subjected to a profanity-laced battery of slurs from multiple students, has declined to press criminal charges against the four seventh-graders involved in the incident. Instead, Klein has elected to allow the school district to pursue disciplinary action.

The video was recorded on Monday and became viral on Wednesday, appearing nationwide. (Read more, and get links to the video.)

Representatives from the district expressed outrage of the incident portrayed in the video and stressed that the behavior of the children was not representative of the Greece community or its students.

Police noted that the four individuals involved in the incident have admitted that they participated in it. They said the families have been notified and all parties have been cooperating.

They also said that, according to their investigation, the bus driver was not responsible for the incident. Police noted that the incident occurred in the back of the bus on Monday afternoon. The same driver has told Klein that he is sorry the incident occurred, Chatterton said.

Both police and district officials noted that the students involved in the incident have received threats. Chatterton said police had obtained one student’s cellphone and it had received “over a thousand missed calls and over a thousand texts threatening him.”

Police say one of the students involved is the stepson of a Greece Police officer, who is not involved in the case.
