Macy's in Great Northern to close by the end of the year

CLAY, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) - The Macy’s in Great Northern Mall will be one of the 68 store locations nation-wide to close its doors.

By the end of the year, the Great  Northern location, which has about 55 associates, will close.

In 2016, Macy’s announced it would be closing about 100 of its stores to focus on better customer experience and to reduce expense.

"The actions announced today are estimated to generate annual expense savings of approximately $550 million, beginning in 2017, enabling the company to invest an additional $250 million in growing the digital business, store-related growth strategies, Bluemercury, Macy’s Backstage and China," according to a release from the company.

"These savings, combined with savings from initiatives implemented in early 2016, exceed the $500 million goal communicated in fall of 2015, one year earlier than expected," the company said.

The Great Northern location opened in 1989.

Two other locations will also be closed by the end of the year— the Marketplace location in Rochester, N.Y. and the Oakdale Mall location in Johnson City, N.Y.

No word yet as to whether the Great Northern employees will be dissolved into other Macy's locations.
