The spirit of The Firefighter Winter Games is less about competition and more about fostering camaraderie.
More than 300 firefighters from 32 departments across the state join together, wearing full turnout gear, for a weekend of fun fighting. No fire is involved. It's all about surviving in the snow!
This year, organizers welcomed their biggest field of fire athletes to date. The Firemen's Association of the State of New York (FASNY) is hosting the event with help from the Cortland County Firemen's Association.
They estimate the games will bring an economic boost of more than $40,000 to the Cortland region.
On Saturday the firefighters competed in tube races, a sled pull, and a hose relay. The events are an opportunity to have fun and improve team work, skills that can be practically applied on the job.
FASNY reported that Baldwinsville's Fire Department team one took top honors in the tube races. Baldwinsville's team two earned second place. Manlius Fire Department's team one rounded out the top three.
The games continue Sunday morning with a broom ball tournament at the Park Center Alumni Ice Arena.
