Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - Neighbors on Syracuse's Northside are speaking out about what they call a major uptick in violent crimes.

Some Northsiders say thefts, burglaries and assaults have become an almost daily occurrence.

Near the corner of 7th North and Court Streets, you'll likely find Dianne Bourgon keeping watch.

As the head of the 7th North Street neighborhood watch, she keeps a close eye on crime in an effort to keep everyone safe. In just the past four years, she's seen a major increase in shootings, drugs, home and vehicle break-ins on the Northside.

"We did have one house down there, the guy was home and they just walked in the back door and the guy caught the woman riffling through his stuff, stealing his stuff he called 911," said Bourgon.

On Thursday afternoon, a man was critically injured after police say he was stabbed multiple times during a carjacking on Mary Street.

And a few weeks ago on Park Street, crime camera video captured two victims inside a car, robbed at gunpoint in the middle of the day.

But just how much has the crime increased on the Northside? Every three months, Syracuse Police release a breakdown of crimes reported on city neighborhood streets.

Over the past year, Syracuse Police have placed several crime cameras throughout the Northside, which have helped them capture criminals and cut down on crime. But some neighbors feel that is bringing more crime into their neighborhood.

"The crime cameras on Butternut is pushing the crime out of that area and now its being more prevalent in this area," said Bourgon.

That's why she's pushing for more cameras in her area. Until those come, she'll continue working with neighbors to take note of suspicious people or activity and call police, keeping watch on her area to become the best defense against crime.
