Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - A man attempting to steal copper was caught on the run, according to Syracuse police.

Officers were called to a reported burglary in progress at a vacant apartment building on the 500 block of Catherine Street around 2:15 p.m. on Friday afternoon.

The snow offered a key clue, fresh footprints were spotted leading to an open basement door.

Police followed the sound of a power tool and saw a power saw and several pieces of pipe that appeared to have recently been cut.

Quickly, officers noticed 19-year old William East running from the building toward his home on the 700 block of East Willow Street, where he was arrested.

East was taken to jail to await an arraignment on charges of Burglary and Petit Larceny.
