Practicing proper gun safety around kids

GEDDES, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) - The tragic death of 8-year-old Shaleek Carrears -- who was shot and killed by his 10-year-old brother in Syracuse earlier this week -- raises the issue of how to keep guns out of the hands of children.

There have been at least 181 unintentional shootings by children in the U.S. in 2017.

Some things to keep in mind:

-Keep your guns securely locked, unloaded. Store ammunition in a separate place

-Remember that kids are kids: they won't always make smart decisions about their own safety. It's up to adults to protect them by making sure they never have access to an unsecured gun

-BeSmart teaches adults five steps to gun safety for kids: secure guns; model responsible behavior around guns; ask if there are guns in homes where your children play; recognize the signs of suicide and depression; tell your peers to be smart about gun safety.
