SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) - The Redhouse Arts Center is launching a new season this week – and this year, it’s special.
The arts center is in the midst of opening the season in a new home in the old Sibley’s Department Store – and visitors have been impressed with the new location.
"We had our first box office ticket sales at the box office a couple days ago and there was a couple that just walked in off the street and they were so thrilled to be here,” said Executive Director Samara Hannah.
Not only is the new center three times the size of the old Redhouse Theater – it’s more flexible.
Right now, the main theater is set up for its tallest set for a production of On Golden Pond, which features former Congressman and Love Boat star Fred Grandy – also known as Gopher to fans of the classic show.
"We built it to have an audience and its really about the people who get to perform here and the people who get to come and be in attendance for us,” Hannah said.
The main theater is set up for 250 seats for the On Golden Pond run.
"It’s a nice experience for us to be able to have the ability to do what we want to do instead of having the space dictate what it is we need the programming dictates what's needed,” Hannah said.
Construction on the new facility began approximately eight months ago – and now it’s ready for a big opening.
"I'm excited, I'm nervous, I'm happy. Its like a dream come true and I know that sounds really crazy but it's true,” Hannah said.
Hannah told NewsChannel 9 that the center has been contacted by a number of groups outside the Redhouse inquiring about using its facilities.
The new center is at 400 South Salina Street in Downtown Syracuse.
