Should Skaneateles residents be concerned about the blue-green algae?

SKANEATELES, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) - Skaneateles residents are concerned about the impact that the blue-green algae has on their water supply.

The City of Syracuse gets its water from Skaneateles, and lakeside residents want to know what’s going on with their water.

The water goes through an intake pipe and through a filtration system that will kill the cells of any living algae. However, the system does not destroy the microcystin, which is a toxic compound that algae produces.

“Anyone who draws their water directly from the lake should be extremely cautious with the use of that. Not bathing, not drinking, not using it for cooking. And it's extremely important that people keep their pets away from the water,” said Jim Lanning, the town supervisor.
