State Police: Man drowned trying to save his girlfriend's cousin

SCHUYLER, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) - State Police are investigating after a man reportedly drowned while trying to save his girlfriend's cousin who had jumped into the Erie Canal in Schuyler.

Troopers responded to the scene near Lock 19 around 8 p.m. on Wednesday.

They say a woman had jumped into the water to rescue her dog.

When she struggled to swim, 26-year-old George Grullon of Utica tried to save her.

Grullon apparently went under water during the incident, but did not resurface.

State Police divers found Grullon’s body around 11:15 p.m.

The dog was pulled to safety by State Police.
