Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - Syracuse University says an associate professor has been fired, and lost his tenure after having a relationship with an undergraduate student.

In a letter to the campus community, Chancellor Kent Syverud says the professor had a consensual relationship with the female student.

He said the associate professor taught, advised and supervised the student during their relationship.

A three-member panel made up of faculty recommended the professor be dismissed and his tenure revoked.

Syverud said he accepted the recommendation and the professor appealed the decision.

Last week, the Board of Trustees reviewed the case and upheld the decision.

Effective immediately, the school says the professor is no longer employed by Syracuse University.
