SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) - Syracuse Chiefs General Manager Jason Smorol confirms to NewsChannel 9 that the team will undergo a name change in the near future.
There has been some speculation about this for quite some time--sparked by the success of the Salt Potato jerseys over the summer-- coupled with the change in ownership.
Smorol says that the team will operate as the Chiefs for the 2018 season.
Then the process will begin to officially change the name and logo for the 2019 season. The 2019 season is when they'll begin serving as the mets triple-a farm team as well.
According to Smorol, the new name has not been decided on.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo mentioned in his State of the State Address on Wednesday that the team would be renamed the Syracuse Mets. The Chiefs are now under the ownership of the Mets.
Smorol says there will be a name change, but he could not confirm that the team would be called the Syracuse Mets.
