Syracuse home to international virtual language school

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) - There are a few companies around Central New York with military contracts, but there may only be one like Progressive Expert Consulting (PEC).

They teach a variety of languages to members of the Air Force and Special Ooperations Force without any one of them stepping foot in Syracuse.

PEC, headquartered on James Street, has thousands of students from the military in their school learning all kinds of languages, from native speakers.

"We have students in class together who can see each other, can interact with each other and there's an instructor leading the class,” said Vice President of System Integration at PEC Mike Feng.

It may be virtual, but it's still school,--not your typical do-it-yourself online class, Feng says.  The monitors watch how everyone behaves in class, and even take attendance and spring into action if someone's not there who should be.

"We email them, we call them.  There’s an entire protocol for the first 15/20 minutes of a class that we follow that our folks follow to make sure they can be participating in the class and that attendance is reported back to their chain of command,” Feng said.

PEC has built a tremendous foundation in Syracuse so their virtual school runs flawlessly.  The primary data center, with battery and generator backup, is secure physically and electronically.
