Syracuse Mayor warning residents of traffic ticket email scam

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) - Emails regarding traffic tickets have been circulating the City of Syracuse, and Mayor Stephanie Miner is warning residents not to fall for these emails.

The emails target city residents, notifying them that they have been issued traffic citations after running red lights caught on camera. The city does not have red light cameras used for ticketing.

In the body of the email, scammers call the individual by name and say that they have 14 days to pay an online fine or risk having their license revoked.

“These emails are fake and are not generated by the city of Syracuse,” said Miner. “Anyone who receives one of these emails should immediately delete it without selecting the link.”

The website given, gov.nys.co, is not a legitimate place to pay tickets.

The city of Syracuse does not contact people for parking or traffic tickets using email.
