Syracuse Police announce TIPS app for smartphones

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) - Syracuse Police are rolling out a new option for those who may have information on an investigation or who would like to report suspicious activity.

911 is reserved for real emergencies, but Syracuse Police now have a tips app for iPhone and Android which allows you to share a tip with police-- and lets officers respond back.
You can also register to receive city-wide alerts from SPD straight to your cell by email or text.

This frees up emergency lines for first responders.

"I think it's open to everyone. Whether you work here, you live here or you just travel here, you may very well see something or know something we're looking for. You want to be aware as well, so it's for everyone. Anyone who wants to sign up for this," said Joe Cecile, first deputy Chief of Police.

The app does not cost the taxpayers anything.

A crime analysis center will monitor all the tips coming in.
