State Police: 13-year-old was returning his run-away cat when he was struck and killed by a car

LYSANDER, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) - A 13-year-old is dead after he was struck by a minivan on River Road near the Northwest Family YMCA in the town of Lysander on Tuesday.

State Police have identified the boy as Lucas Delong.

Investigators say Delong was walking with a 12-year-old friend, en route to the YMCA.

According to State Police, Delong noticed that his cat had followed the two boys from his residence and was walking with them.

Delong picked up the cat and both boys turned around and began to walk back towards Delong's home.

Without warning, Delong quickly veered into the northbound traffic lane and was hit by a white mini-van.

They say the driver took measure to avoid the boys – including slowing down – but struck the boy when he ran into the roadway.

Video surveillance from the YMCA showed that the driver had no time to react, due to the suddenness of Delong's appearance in the road.

Delong was taken to Upstate University Hospital, where he died.

The roadway between Patchett Road and Timber Banks Parkway re-opened after being closed for more than four hours.

State Police say no evidence indicates that the driver was on a cell phone or that alcohol was involved.
