Victim of purse robbery: 'He told me he had a knife and he was going to stab me'

CLAY, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) - The victim of Monday's robbery is warning others to be vigilant after a man snatched her purse while she was sitting in her car.

The woman, who asked not to be identified, was at the intersection of Oswego and Elcrest roads on Monday when she stopped to let a man cross the road.

She hadn’t gotten up to speed for her automatic door locks to kick in.

The Sheriff’s Office says 26-year-old Joshua Werchinski, of Liverpool, got into the passenger seat and demanded a ride and her purse.

“I grabbed my purse with my right hand so I could keep it— that’s when he told me he had a knife and he was going to stab me, so I let go of the purse and he took off,” the victim said.

Thanks to the victim's excellent description and alert citizens, the suspect was quickly caught in the Bayberry area.

Werchinski was charged with robbery and is scheduled to be back in court next week.

He is scheduled to return to court on March 16.
