What is that strange light over Syracuse?

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) - There was a question submitted recently by a viewer about a strange light in the sky over Syracuse.

When I was in the weather office, we’d get these questions frequently.

It’s not sinister or evil.

The blue, purple or red spot in the sky over Syracuse, is light reflecting off the Barclay-Damon building in downtown Syracuse onto the low overcast of clouds.

The building is located on Jefferson Street about a block east of the Landmark Theater.

As we get into the cooler time of year, this becomes more common.

The cloud bases tend to be lower in the cooler months, or there may be some light mist or snow falling, helping to reflect that color.
