DeWitt Police: Wegmans credit card thief stole cards in several states

DeWitt Police say a Connecticut man arrested after stealing credit cards at Wegmans was behind similar thefts in a number of East Coast states.
DeWitt (WSYR-TV) – DeWitt Police say a Connecticut man arrested after stealing credit cards at Wegmans was behind similar thefts in a number of East Coast states.

Police say 40-year-old Brian Sasson of Shunpike Road in Cromwell, Conn., stole credit cards from the purses of shoppers and used them to buy gift cards.

DeWitt Police began investigating in April when a female shopper reported that her credit cards had been stolen while she shopped at a Wegmans store on East Genesee Street.

On June 1, they arrested Sasson when a loss-prevention investigator and employee at the same Wegmans recognized him as he allegedly tried to steal another victim’s cards.

Police say they found nearly two dozen gift cards and credit cards in Sasson’s possession during their investigation.

They say he stole cards from ten victims in Vermont, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey – as well as Manlius and DeWitt.

Police believe Sasson targeted people in libraries or universities.

They have charged him with:

10 counts of forgery, second degree
4 counts of identity theft, first degree
22 counts of criminal possession of stolen property, fourth degree

He was already being held at the Justice Center in lieu of $50,000 cash bail or bond as a result of his June 1 arrest for six counts of grand larceny.

Police say he is now being held on an additional $50,000 bail for the more recent charges.

Police are still investigating Sasson’s travels in other parts of the northeast.
