WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (WSYR-TV) - After starting the season 6-0 in games decided by single digits, SU has now lost its last two close contests. The first came before Christmas in overtime against St. Bonaventure. The second came Wednesday night on the road at Wake Forest.
Bryant Crawford led the Demon Deacons with 19 points thanks to some hot shooting from the outside as Wake Forest edged Syracuse down the stretch 73-67. Crawford went 4-for-7 from three-point range while Wake as a team went 9-for-19.
Frank Howard paced the Orange with 23 points. Tyus Battle chipped in with 13 points, but the two combined for 11 turnovers including a couple of critical miscues in the game's final minutes. Oshae Brissett and Paschal Chukwu both finished in double figures as well. Brissett went for 16 points while Chukwu added 10.
A key stat in this game was the rebounding total. Wake Forest grabbed 38 boards to just 29 for Syracuse. SU came in ranked among the top 10 nationally in rebounding margin but lost the battle on the glass by nine Wednesday night.
Next up for the Orange is a home game against Notre Dame on Saturday afternoon. The Irish will be without All-American forward Bonzie Colson who will miss the next eight weeks with a foot injury.
