'Cuse Falls Short, Orange lose to NC State

A tie-breaking "3" from Markell Johnson in the final minute pushes NC State past

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) - It was a heartbreaker for the Orange on Valentine's Day.  Markell Johnson snapped a 70-70 tie with just over 30 seconds left in regulation, lifting NC State to a 74-70 victory inside the Dome.

As expected, the game was tight throughout.  The largest lead for either side all night long with eight points.  Matthew Moyer returned from injury to provide a spark.  The red-shirt freshman chipped in with eight points and four rebounds off the bench.  Syracuse was led by true freshman Oshae Brissett.  The forward from Ontario played one of his best games in a Syracuse uniform.  Brissett led all scorers with 25 points, and during one stretch, scored nine straight points for Syracuse early in the second half.

Tyus Battle and Frank Howard were the only other two players in double figures for SU.  Battle finished with 17 points while Howard added 16.  The backcourt, however, combined for six turnovers.

NC State got some offense from an unlikely source in the second half.  Sam Hunt came off the bench to make four three-pointers.  Hunt finished with 14 points.  The Wolfpack, as a team, shot 55% from the field.

With the loss, SU drops to 6-7 in conference play and into a 10th place tie with Boston College.  Next up, is a trip to Miami on Saturday.
