Syracuse beats Harvard in final scrimmage before regular season opener

SYRACUSE (Syracuse University Athletics) - Syracuse, N.Y. - The Syracuse men’s lacrosse team downed Harvard 15-8 in their final tune-up scrimmage before the 2017 season starts on Saturday, Feb. 11 against Siena.
The Orange got a hat trick from Nick Mariano in the win, with Brad Voigt and Ryan Simmons each adding a pair of goals. Evan Molloy turned away 10 shots and allowed just seven goals in three periods of play, while Ben Williams won 13-of-20 face offs as well.
After Harvard’s Ryan Graff opened up the scoring, ‘Cuse responded on its first extra-man opportunity of the game when Voigt finished a pass from Brendan Bomberry to even things at one.
Harvard scored again with 39 second remaining in the first on a Jake Scott goal off a Morgan Cheek pass, but Mariano scored his first tally of the day on a feed from Jordan Evans with just five seconds remaining in the period to even things once again at two heading into the second quarter.
From there, Syracuse took the lead and never looked back. Evans scored a goal of his own on a pass from Bomberry at the 13:16 mark of the second, before Mariano scored his second with 9:59 before halftime to give the Orange a 4-2 lead.
That lead was upped to 5-2 just nine seconds later, when Williams won the face off to himself out the front and found Mariano on the right side of the cage, who rocked a shot past Robert Shaw for the score.
Shaw, one of four Crimson goalies to play on the day, made seven saves on the day.
Joe Lang halted the 4-0 Syracuse run for the Crimson on a feed from Nigel Andrews, before Peter Blynn scored with 6:55 left before halftime to pull back within one, but Nate Solomon buried a pass from Pat Carlin less than two minutes later to ensure Harvard couldn’t tie it up.
Robert Mencke scored in the waning moments of the half to send the teams off for the break with the Orange leading 6-5.
Matt Lane rifled a hard goal 41 seconds into the third, before Ryan Simmons finished a pass from Stephen Rehfuss to open an 8-5 Orange lead. Harvard scored another two-straight with James Sullivan and Andrews finding the back of the net in succession, but Bomberry scooped a loose ball in front and scored before Simmons finished a Mariano pass with 14 seconds left in the third to send Syracuse into the fourth with a 10-7 lead.
‘Cuse scored another three-straight goals to open the final frame, with Carlin, Jamie Trimboli and Voigt each scoring in the first 3:43 of the fourth to take a 13-7 lead.
Graff scored the final Harvard goal, and Drake Porter’s only blemish on the day, stopping the only other shot he faced, with 10:09 remaining.
Tyler Ford and Riley O’Sullivan scored the final-two Orange goals to give the final result at 15-8.
In addition to Williams’ dominance at the X, Cal Paduda went 1-of-2 on faceoffs, while Joe DeMarco won his only attempt.
‘Cuse also went 2-of-4 on man-up opportunities on the day.
Now it’s officially game-week for the Orange, with Syracuse hosting Siena in the season opener on Feb. 11 at 4 p.m.
