SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) - Our latest Athlete of the Week is a record-setting and state-qualifying swimmer for the JD/CBA boys.
Chris Bushnell will be headed to state after breaking a 14-year-old record set by Tom Nowakowski in the 100 backstroke at the SCAC invite.
Bushnell swam a 53.07 topping the 2004 record of 53.72.
"Ever since ninth grade I wanted to break a record. I didn't know it was gonna be the backstroke record. In 10th grade, I started progressing in backstroke, that’s when I really wanted to break the record I did not know it was gonna be this year so that was really surprising and fun," said Bushnell.
Bushnell beat his own personal best of 54.65.
The junior will not only be headed to the state in the backstroke, but will also participate in the 200 medley relay as well after a second place finish at the invite.
"It feels really good to have two events because I have more time on the meet. More time participating in the meet, its gonna be a lot of fun," said Bushnell.
