SU fans head to Georgetown for final regular season Big East game against rival Hoyas

Syracuse (WSYR-TV) -- It won’t be as Orange as the Carrier Dome was a couple of weeks ago, but the Verizon Center will have plenty of SU fans there to cheer on the team as they take on Georgetown once again this weekend.

Two bus loads of Orange fans headed to Washington, D.C. on Friday.

They rolled out bright and early for the big trip to Georgetown. If there’s any time to follow SU hoops on the road, this would be it, the final regular season Big East game ever for the Orange against the arch rival Hoyas.

"I've never been there before so I'm looking forward to it. Several people have warned me that Georgetown fans are not very nice. A lot of people said, be careful, you're not wearing your orange, I said of course I'm wearing my orange," said Candace Johnson, who’s never been to a Georgetown/SU game on the road.

“I haven’t gone to an away Georgetown game before, so it seems like the last opportunity,” said another Orange fan who’s making her first trip to Georgetown, Mary Studdiford.

After the Hoyas came into the Dome two weeks ago and thumped the Orange in front of a record crowd, many fans say they’re traveling down to D.C. hoping for some pay back.

“The last time I went to a Georgetown game in Georgetown I was in my 20s and it was on campus. This is at the Verizon Center, it's going to be a lot more fun. I've been to hockey games there so it's a great venue. It's a great rivalry. I hope we beat their socks off because it’s our turn,” said Orange fan Jean Reilly.

It's a pretty quick trip. They left Friday morning at 9 a.m. and they’ll be back Saturday night at around 9:30. And everybody, with the exception of one person, is hoping to come back with an SU win.

"I've been a Georgetown fan since Ewing, Reggie Williams, Perry McDonald,” said lone Georgetown fan Tyrone Winn.

“They're letting me on the bus, I don't know what's going to happen once I get on the bus but they're letting me on,” Winn continued.

SU and Georgetown are two of the seven founding members of the Big East Conference. SU leads the conference series by three games 37-34.
