University Hill area buzzing with Orange back in the Final Four

Ten years have passed since the Syracuse University men’s basketball team cut down the nets in the NCAA Tournament, winning the 2003 National Championship.
Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – Ten years have passed since the Syracuse University men’s basketball team cut down the nets in the NCAA Tournament, winning the 2003 National Championship.

And now, students in the University Hill area are looking forward to the Orange taking another shot at a national championship in the college game’s premier event.

"There's definitely a buzz on campus, we can't wait till Saturday and good luck to Michigan because they're not going to win,” said Omar Salama, who traveled to Washington, DC, to see the Orange in the Elite Eight round of the NCAA Tournament.

“Oh, everyone's excited about the big tournament and that we're getting a chance to go to the Final Four,” said student Hakim Griffin.

SU has advanced to five Final Four rounds in its history – four times during coach Jim Boeheim’s era.

2003 marks the only time the Orange has won the National Championship.

"Everyone's really excited. This isn't something that happens very often and I'm a freshman so it’s my first basketball experience and I just feel really lucky we're going so far in the Championships,” said freshman Ellen Vermes.

Freshman Ryan Raigrodski said that he was an Orange fan before enrolling, but being on campus has made the SU tournament run that much more special.

"It’s crazy. I mean I wanted them to go to the Final Four obviously, but being here is completely different. I've been a Syracuse fan because I always wanted to go here but being on campus while it happened, it is crazy,” Raigrodski said.

The Orange are set to tip off against Michigan at 8:49 p.m. on Saturday night in Atlanta.
