SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) - For Westhill’s Casey Rogers, our latest Athlete of the Week, lacrosse has been his whole life. His dad is an assistant coach at Syracuse University and his sister plays for Gary Gait and the SU women’s team.
“I picked up my first stick around kindergarten, maybe preschool. With my dad coaching, I was around some of the best players around at that point. I was around lacrosse everyday. I was at his practices, playing with all his players. Fortunately I was able to pick up some of the stuff they taught me and put it to work in games,” Rogers said.
Rogers has become one of the best players in Section III.
This season, Rogers has scored 61 goals, helping Westhill reach the Class D Sectional Championship game.
“He is a four-year starter for us. He has been a leading scorer at the attack position. He faces off. He can do everything but probably jump in the goal for us. He’s been a huge asset. He is a great leader on the field. He is a huge motivator for the kids. He is our driving force,” said Warriors lacrosse coach Mike Leuze
Rogers is a three-sport athlete, playing both football and hockey.
“Football has definitely taught me a lot of things about character. Getting knocked down and getting back up. Hockey has taught me things about your teammates, and how to really enjoy being on a team— how to love your teammates and trust your teammates. Being a three sport athlete is something I will always love being, because the things I have learned is something I will never forget,” Rogers said.
