The young student-athletes will wear pink jerseys as they raise money and awareness for breast cancer.
“It means a lot for our team to put these [jerseys] on and support the cause,” said Fayetteville-Manlius High School hockey player Erik Badger.
It’s a cause that began three years ago, when F-M hockey mom Nancy Chase, her son a senior, lost her battle against breast cancer.
“It's in memory for her, a legacy that we carry on here and it's to get the community together so everyone knows who she was, so everyone comes out and supports us,” Badger said.
The games will give Central New York high school hockey fans a chance to see players in a different zone.
“We actually have seven schools represented. F-M now combines with Bishop Grimes and ESM to make one team, CBA is with J-D, Oswego and C-NS, so it's many communities together and it's fantastic,” said F-M hockey mom Valerie Capriotti.
The students said while winning is important to them, they believe it is more important to help others win their battle against breast cancer.
“I had a neighbor who had breast cancer. She was able to overcome it through fighting and never giving up,” said C-NS hockey player Newell Field.
“Raising all the money kind of makes it worth that much more and it's a great feeling to do it,” said F-M hockey player Mateo Capriotti.
Gift baskets, raffles, and t-shirts designed in memory of Chase will be sold, with all the money raised benefiting the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund.
Beth Baldwin will be at the event to accept donations on behalf of her mother’s organization.
The 3rd annual ‘Pink the Rink’ charity hockey event is set for Friday, Jan. 10 at the Onondaga Nation Arena in Nedrow. The first puck will drop at 5:30 p.m. and will feature Oswego High School and CBA.
That game will be followed by F-M and C-NS at 7:30 p.m.
After the high school players are finished battling it out, former F-M high school players will hit the ice for a friendly alumni game. All former F-M high school hockey players are invited to participate.
