Albany (WSYR-TV) – A Board of Regents subcommittee has voted to make cheerleading a competitive sport in New York State.

Officials with the State Education Department confirm the subcommittee approved the decision on Monday.

The full Board of Regents will vote on the decision on Tuesday.

If the board approves the decision, supporters say the designation will make it safer for students to compete in cheerleading with more oversight from the State.
