Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – A 15-year-old Bishop Grimes student has his sights set on a world record.

Gianni Vigliotti is shy, but confident, after a routine workout at the Stons Barbell gym in Syracuse.

"The world record for squatting for my age and weight, which is 192 weight class, is 365 (pounds) and I am going to squat about 400,” Vigliotti said.

The high school sophomore says he's already broken the record among friends. He wants to make it official at an International Powerlifting Association in two weeks.

His trainer, James Moritz, thinks more Central New Yorkers should be aware of Vigliotti’s accomplishments and his aspirations.

"People were really behind Carmelo Anthony and he wasn't from Syracuse. This kid was born and raised here," Moritz said. "People should be more behind this kid. What he is doing is not something everyone can do. 365-pounds is a lot. You are not going to see that at an average gym, let alone a 15-year old kid. He is under 200 pounds.”

Moritz insists he's never trained anyone quite like Vigliotti. After their goals were shattered in the local gym, both men are confident the teen will take the official squatting title in Pennsylvania on June 22.

"Makes me feel proud that I actually achieved something like breaking a world record and that I might be able to carry it on even more,” Vigliotti said.

"Johnny is really modest. He's a good kid. I can see him being in the top 10 in the next three years, without a doubt,” Moritz said.

While he may not get the recognition of a promising local basketball or football star, Moritz admits weightlifting is a lonely game.

"At the end of the day, it is him against the bar. That's it,” Moritz said.

Vigliotti hopes to compete in the Men’s Amateur Raw Open Competition in York, Pa.
