Charges will not be brought against FSU QB Winston in alleged rape

A redshirt freshman quarterback who has taken Florida State to the top of the Bowl Championship Series will not face sexual assault charges.
Syracuse (WSYR-TV/CNN) - A redshirt freshman quarterback who has taken Florida State to the top of the Bowl Championship Series will not face sexual assault charges.

The 19-year old accuser reported that Jameis Winston raped her in December of 2012, but Winston says the sex was consensual.

The investigation was reopened in November 2013.

State Attorney Willie Meggs says Winston submitted a DNA sample on Nov. 14 that turned up positive.

However, there was also DNA from another unknown male reported.

Meggs said if they proceeded to trial, having an unknown DNA in a sexual assault case would be a problem.

“We have carefully examined all the evidence in this case and have concluded that no charges will be filed against anyone in this case,” Meggs said.

Shortly after the announcement the female accuser released this statement through her attorney:

"The victim in this case had the courage to immediately report her rape to the police and she relied upon them to seek justice. The victim has grave concerns that her experience, as it unfolded in the public eye and through social media, will discourage other victims of rape from coming forward and reporting."

Meanwhile, Winston and the Florida State Seminoles are set to take on 20th ranked Duke in the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship on Saturday.
