Countdown to hockey season: Crunch season opener is tomorrow

Just a few months after the club’s first Calder Cup finals appearance, the Syracuse Crunch are gearing up for a new season.
Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – Just a few months after the club’s first Calder Cup finals appearance, the Syracuse Crunch are gearing up for a new season.

In addition to the team’s 2012-13 success, the Crunch are celebrating two decades of hockey in the Salt City.

Their season opener is Saturday when the Crunch will travel to Binghamton to face the Senators.

But club officials say the season will really get going on Oct. 12 when they host Thruway rivals the Rochester Americans.

Club owner Howard Dolgon told NewsChannel 9 the home opener would be "heartwarming and nostalgic" celebration as a famous former player makes his return to help kick-off the home-opener.

With an infusion of young talent complementing its veteran core from last year’s playoff run, the Crunch anticipate another successful campaign.

“It’s great that we had such a great run into June last season, and now we’re heading into our 20th anniversary season and it’s time. When back in 1994 a lot of skeptics said ‘You’re entering a hockey graveyard, it will never work here.’ And to be celebrating season No. 20 on Oct. 12 really is something special,” Dolgon said.

For those who can’t make it to the War Memorial, all Crunch games will be aired live on ESPN radio during the 2013-14 season.

A complete schedule of Crunch games is available on the team's website.
