(ESPN/New York Times/WSYR-TV) - Michael Sam, an All-American defensive lineman for the Missouri Tigers said he is gay.

Sam will likely be drafted by an NFL team in May.

If he is, he will become the first openly gay NFL player.

Sam said he was gay in an interview with ESPN's "Outside the Lines" and the New York Times.

In the interview, Sam said he is comfortable in his skin and just wants to be a football player in the NFL.

"I just want to go to the team who drafts me," he said, "because that team knows about me, knows that I'm gay, and also knows that I work hard. That's the team I want to go to," said Sam.

On Twitter, NFL spokesperson Greg Aiello wrote, "We admire Michael Sam's honesty and courage. We look forward to welcoming and supporting Michael Sam in 2014."
