Los Angeles (WSYR-TV) - When Jason Collins signed a 10-day contract with the Brooklyn Nets on Sunday, he became the first active openly gay player in not only the NBA, but in North America's four major professional sports.

He suited up and played for the Nets Sunday night on the road against the Los Angeles Lakers.

The 35-year-old center revealed he was gay in an interview with Sports Illustrated last year.

He has played 12 NBA seasons, including his first seven with the Nets.
