Child dies in crash in Jefferson County

It happened at 7:20 p.m. on County Route 45 in the town of Champion. The driver of the car is in critical condition at Upstate University Hospital
Champion, New York (WSYR-TV) - A two-year-old child is dead after a crash in the Jefferson County town of Champion on Friday.

State Police said 42-year-old Wilhelmina Johnson, of Copenhagen, New York, was driving a car north on County Route 45 with the child in a rear passenger car seat around 7:20 p.m.

Police said Johnson lost control, drove off the other side of the road, then over-corrected and drove into the path of an oncoming pick-up truck.

Troopers said the driver of the truck tried to avoid the collision but could not.

Both Johnson and the child were flown to Upstate University Hospital with head injuries.

The child was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Johnson is in critical condition.

The driver of the truck was treated and released at the scene.

The crash is still under investigation.
