Central Square (WSYR-TV) – The principal and staff of an elementary school in the Central Square Central School District were freezing for a reason in Oneida Lake Wednesday morning.

Cleveland Elementary Principal Mike Smolnik along with fellow staff plunged into Oneida Lake at about 9 a.m. in an effort to collect items for the North Shore food pantry.

Smolnik told his students during the “Food Fight” challenge he would jump into the lake if they collected more than 1,000 non-perishable items.

The school came through, gathering more than 3,400 items.

Smolnik lived up to his word and took the plunge with his staff by his side.

Students were bussed to the event where they chanted “Cleveland” as the group jumped into the 38 degree water in North Bay behind Vellas Market.
