Former Upstate nurse sentenced to prison for sex crimes involving underage patient

Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - A former nurse at Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital was sentenced to two years in state prison Monday by Onondaga County Judge Anthony Aloi.

In May, Joseph Carelli of Marcellus pleaded guilty to crimes involving an underage patient, including two counts of criminal sexual act in the third degree.

In exchange for that plea, it was agreed upon that he would spend one and one half to two years in prison, along with three years of post-release supervision. The longer sentence was chosen.

Judge Aloi said he chose two years because of Carelli's role of authority. The judge said, "In my mind, a fundamental breach of the trust the hospital placed in you and more importantly, the trust the patient that you were caring for had in you."

Carelli must also register as a sex offender after his release from prison. A seven-year order of protection was also placed on Carelli.

His New York State nursing license was also suspended.
