Marcellus assembling Citizens Advisory Committee to determine future of town buildings

The Town of Marcellus is calling on its residents to help determine whether it should share office buildings with the Village of Marcellus.
Marcellus (WSYR-TV) - The Town of Marcellus is calling on its residents to help determine whether it should share office buildings with the Village of Marcellus.

The historic building which houses the Marcellus Town Hall surely won't be torn down, as that option derailed plans back in 2006 when the town was in a similar position as it is now.

Issues with the building haven’t improved. Just in the past four weeks, the town hall boiler has been replaced and a sump pump was put in to get rid of the two inches of standing water that routinely sits in the basement right near important records, but that's not the biggest issue with the building.

"The court has a lot of stipulations of what needs to be in a courtroom setting and we don't have any of that," said Marcellus Town Supervisor Mary Jo Paul.

Paul said the Town Highway Garage needs work and the Village of Marcellus Mayor said the village could be interested in joining a new or renovated facility with the town.

"Our police department, which, there's an area of consolidation, our police department takes care of the surrounding area, the park, the school district and they're outside the village, that's consolidation, but our police department could use the space for their vehicles we currently use for the highway department," said Village of Marcellus Mayor John Curtin.

But Curtin said moving village offices into a building with the town doesn't sound quite as appealing.

"We have enough debt, particularly a lot of unfunded mandates from the State that need to be addressed. That's the big factor for us," Curtin said.

"There's so many issues coming up at the same time that we felt that by forming a committee and having citizens look into it, now is the time,” Paul said. “Things aren't getting better. They're only getting worse and we need to address all of that."

The future could mean a renovated town hall building, an addition to it, or a new one in or outside of the village. Paul said the town needs to start figuring out what their future will look like soon.

Paul said she's hoping for a vote sometime in 2014.

People in Marcellus have until Thursday to volunteer for the Citizens Advisory Committee set up to address the building issue.
