'On demand' lawn mowing service in CNY: There's an app for that

Cutting the grass on a hot day can certainly be a chore, but now there's an app to help Central New Yorkers with lawn service.
Manlius (WSYR-TV) -- Cutting the grass on a hot day can certainly be a chore, but now there's an app to help CNYers with lawn service. A few months ago, NewsChannel 9 introduced you to Plowz, a cell phone app that brings you "on demand" snow plowing. The creators have just launched a new app for lawn care called Mowz.

All it takes is a few clicks on your smart phone and you can have your grass cut in no time. The customer just has to request the date and time they want their lawn mowed. The landscaper will show up and cut the grass.

Mowz will take home 30 percent of the profit and the landscaper will take home 70 percent.

There's no contract and no interactions with the landscaper, it's just a mowing service whenever you want it. Co-creator Willis Mahoney says Central New York landscapers have been welcoming the extra business and so far, Mowz is working with 40 providers in our area.

"We track the GPS in real time of all the providers and the closest provider gets the job. Also to note, after he does the job, the consumer rates the job. So it's an incentive for the provider to do a good job and works well for the consumer because they have a guy who knows their property and they keep that person," Mahoney said.

Daniel Detor teamed up with Mowz this summer and says the partnership brings in one or two new jobs every day.

"90 percent of the legwork is done by Mowz, as far as contact with the customer, getting jobs established and drumming up work. So for me as a business owner I can continue working and they're out getting more business," said Daniel Detor of AEP Lawn & Snow.

Prices start at $25 per cut depending on yard size and you don't have to be home while the landscaper works. After the job is complete, Mowz will charge you and they'll even send you a photo of your freshly groomed grass.

The Plowz and Mowz app creators are Syracuse University graduates. They developed the app less than a year ago and it's available in 30 cities across the country.

Creators say their headquarters and home will stay here in Central New York.
