SCSD hopes new website recruits while changing perception of district

The Syracuse City School District has launched a new recruitment website to help bring in the best candidates for the many jobs they expect to fill.
Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - The Syracuse City School District has launched a new recruitment website to help bring in the best candidates for the many jobs they expect to fill.

It's no secret the district has been battling tight budgets for years and has been forced to layoff employees.

"I think there is a misperception out there that our district has been cutting teaching positions over the years. In the past three years we actually haven't cut classroom teaching positions," said Jeremy Grant-Skinner with the Syracuse City School District.

Skinner says anyone laid off was offered a position back in the district.

Still last year, he says they hired 170 teachers and figure the district will need as many as 200 for next year.

The site includes profiles of staff members, showing what it's like to work in the district and hopefully help people overcome any misperceptions about the district.

Students looking to join the education field say the new site is a helpful resource.

"The resources they have are kind of low. The students, some try and some don't, just kind of depends where you're placed," said Deanna Marcelli, a junior education major at Syracuse University.

"If the opportunity presented itself - absolutely. You take what you can get right now," said Danielle Graham, an education graduate student at Syracuse University.

The district says the new website will help spread the word about the openings, but not just for people in Central New York, but across New York and even outside the State.

"We're hoping this gives people an idea right up front about what it takes to succeed in the district and the opportunities that are here, so they'll be excited enough to click that button and apply right away," Skinner said.

The district is not only looking for teachers, but principals and vice principals.
