Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - A Syracuse University student is breaking her silence about what some are calling an epidemic on college campuses.

Across the country, sex abuse statistics are alarming, with studies finding 25 percent of students are assaulted during their time at school.

In 2012, the latest year statistics are available, the Syracuse University Department of Public Safety received 10 complaints alleging sex offenses. Eight of those were reported to have happened on-campus.

In the video above, SU student Jackie Reilly shares her emotional story of what happened to her as a sophomore and how she is uniting her friends and classmates to fight back.

SU won't comment on any aspect of Reilly’s case, but the university says it takes all reports of sexual abuse very seriously.

In addition to counseling and other support, Syracuse University DPS Chief Tony Callisto says, "Our detectives work to develop a safety plan to make sure that the person feels safe, has safe transportation to get back and forth to class and we try to make the experience one where they feel well supported by the folks at the university."
