Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – Retail giant Target says that approximately 40 million customers’ credit card information may have been compromised.

On Wednesday, the Secret Service confirmed that it was investigating the security breach.

According to CNN, the company says cards used in stores between Nov. 27 and Dec. 15 may have been subjected to the breach.

The thieves reportedly gained access to data on the magnetic strips of shoppers' cards, potentially allowing them to produce counterfeit versions, according to Krebs on Security, a former Washington Post writer’s daily blog on computer security and cybercrime.

Krebs does not believe customers who used their cards online were affected by the issue.
