Auburn (WSYR-TV) – The Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office has identified a man who they believe murdered his stepfather at the home they shared on Lakeview Drive in the town of Fleming late Monday night.

The Sheriff’s Office has charged 18-year-old Logan Jones with murder; but they are still looking for the weapon he allegedly used to take the life of 41-year-old James Welsh.

They believe Jones discarded the knife – which they described as a kitchen-style knife – somewhere near the scene.

They are asking residents in the Lakeview Drive, White Birch Lane, and Forest Hill Drive neighborhoods to call them if they locate the weapon.

The Sheriff’s Office says Jones ran away from the house after the incident.

Welsh was taken to Auburn Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Deputies – with the help of Auburn City Police and State Police – searched for a little more than an hour before taking Jones into custody in the city of Auburn.

Jones was arraigned in Town of Fleming Court and taken to the Cayuga County Jail.

He is being held without bail.

The Sheriff’s Office noted that both Logan and Welsh were arrested in connection to a burglary over the summer.

Anyone who has information than can help the Sheriff’s Office in its investigation should call the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office at (315) 253-3902 or the 911 center.
