Amsterdam (WSYR-TV) – A State Police Trooper has died from injuries after his cruiser was hit by a tractor-trailer on the Thruway near Amsterdam.

Trooper David Cunniff had pulled over another vehicle near exit 27 in Amsterdam around 8:30 Monday night.

Police say Cunniff, 35, was inside his cruiser with emergency lights on when it was hit by the tractor-trailer and dragged 50 yards into an embankment.

He was taken to Albany Medical Center, where he died Tuesday.

Cunniff is from Duanesburg and is survived by his wife, Amy, and two sons, 6-year-old Caleb and 4-year-old Zachary.

He was a 9 year veteran of the State Police. Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.

The car that Cunniff had pulled over was also hit by the tractor-trailer. The driver of that car is Eric Heller, 57, of Stoney Creek in Warren County.

Heller was taken to Albany Medical Center and is listed in fair condition.

State Police are still investigating the crash and say it’s not clear at this time why the tractor-trailer drove off the roadway.

Alcohol and weather do not appear to be factors in the crash, according to police.

At this time, no charges have been filed against the driver of the tractor-trailer.
