Outlet stores: The Real Deal

Outlet malls are a popular destination for holiday shoppers looking for great deals, but the Better Business Bureau has a warning for consumers.
Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – Outlet malls are a popular destination for holiday shoppers looking for great deals.

But, the Better Business Bureau wants to remind shoppers that some merchandise is produced specifically for outlet stores – and it’s not the leftover merchandise from retail stores.

Oftentimes, it’s of lower quality and that’s reflected in the price.

To avoid buying lower-quality items, ask the outlet store associates if the merchandise falls into such a category – and check to make sure the discounts are genuine.

If the pre-discounted price is the same as the MSRP, you may not be saving money.

The MSRP – which is usually on the tag – is the price cap set by the manufacturer, but it’s often undercut by retailers.

If you have the time to research prices, compare the retail price online with the price of the outlet store to decide if it’s actually worth the trip.

The Better Business Bureau also suggests shopping at the end of the seasons like August or March, when new merchandise is typically brought in from retail stores.
