Scammers claiming they’re calling from your gas or electric company: The Real Deal

It's been bitterly cold recently and scammers are trying to take advantage of that to steal your money.
Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - It's been bitterly cold recently and scammers are trying to take advantage of that to steal your money.

How the scam works:

The Better Business Bureau says the scammers are calling people pretending to be from a local gas or electric company.

He or she will tell you that you are late on your bill or that your electricity meter is not working and needs to be replaced at your expense.

They'll tell you that you need to pay immediately or your utilities will be shut off.

But instead of accepting payment by credit card or check, the caller will say they'll only accept payment via a pre-paid debit card.

If you don't have one, they'll advise you to get one and then call them back. This is a huge read flag.

Once you give them the card number and the money transfers, you will be unable to get that money back.

Things to remember:

- Your utility company will accept credit or check for payment.

- Electric meters are the property of utility companies and they are responsible for repairs and replacement.

- If you feel pressured for immediate payment or personal information, hang up and call the company directly to ensure you are speaking to a real representative.
